How to position a dehumidifier
Dehumidifiers are most often used for either general humidity control, whether you’re dealing with everyday humidity from cooking and showering, or for drying specific materials after water damage. General humidity control may also be needed at warmer times of year, or near rooms such as bathrooms or kitchens which are a source of moisture from which steam may arise. But to get the best results from your dehumidifier, correct placement is key.
Why does proper dehumidifier placement matter?
Many people assume they can place a dehumidifier anywhere and still get results. In reality, poor positioning can lead to uneven drying, lingering damp spots, or even wasted energy. Dehumidifiers need access to circulating air and should be placed thoughtfully based on the moisture source and layout of the space.
How should I position a dehumidifier?
To control humidity, a dehumidifier would be best placed in a central area in the property, but taking into account the moisture source for example in a kitchen, or on a landing near a bathroom. This will help mitigate the chance of mould developing from excess humidity in these areas.
For structural drying following leaks or water damage, typically a more intense drying program is required, with a more powerful industrial dehumidifier.
Positioning of the dehumidifier correctly is vital for targeting the affected damp building materials. Usually, dehumidifiers have an air inlet and a dry air outlet. The dry air outlet should be directed towards the damp area. At Dehumidifier Rental we recently assisted a plumbing company which, after a discussion about dry air targeting, realised they’d been positioning dehumidifiers the wrong way round for 20 years!
How to speed up the drying process
Dehumidifiers are powerful machines which can help to dry the dampest of areas. But if you are looking to speed up evaporation, it often helps to add industrial fans to increase airflow over affected areas. For example, if a ceiling is wet from a pipe leak in a bathroom above, a dehumidifier could be positioned in the affected room, with a powerful fan pointed up to the ceiling to increase airflow over that wet area.
